We are looking for driven and proactive individuals or teams to take on the permanent position of Civils Operative / Civils Team.

About you:

You are committed to high standards, safe working practices, supporting your colleagues, and delivering quality infrastructure. You stick to guidelines and procedures and maintain high health and safety standards throughout.

You have proven experience as a Civils Operative or similar role in the utilities sector with a sound knowledge of working practices, techniques, and materials associated with the installation of electrical infrastructure.

You are highly capable when it comes to excavations within the public and private realm, installation of ducting, cable pulling, backfill and reinstatement, concrete works, and general street works.

The role in brief

  • Ensuring that the safety of colleagues and the public at the centre of everything you and the team do.
  • A Commitment to health and safety, including compliance with internal policies and procedures, as well as the applicable regulations (NRSWA).
  • Effective communicating back to the Civils Manager and planning team on the status of ongoing projects.
  • Building infrastructure in accordance with the approved drawings and construction information.
  • Completing all safety documentation on site.
  • Site Set-up including signage, guarding and barrier in accordance with traffic management plans and your NRSWA training.
  • Completing and recording quality control activities, such as using mandrills/foam pigs for clearing ducts prior to cable pulling.
  • Trenching safely utilizing the appropriate method, mechanized or by hand as identified by your risk assessment and training.
  • Formation of concrete plinths for feeder pillars.
  • Zero defect target reinstatement of footway and carriageways.

Key Responsibilities

Site documentation

  • Ability to read construction drawings.
  • Completion of point of work risk assessments.
  • Daily plant inspections, including on and off-hire condition checks for hired plant (plant operators).
  • Recording of deliveries.
  • Accident, incident and near miss reporting.
  • Plant usage time recording (HAVS).
  • Providing regular photograph updates of work progress.

Site preparation

  • Assist in setting up construction work area, including the installation of temporary fencing (Chapter 8/Heras fencing etc.), signage in accordance with traffic management plans and NRSWA training.

Excavation and backfilling

  • Proficiently operate heavy machinery such as excavators, in accordance with your competency and training.
  • Hand excavation within 500mm of existing utilities in accordance with HSG 47 using correct tool selection.
  • Use of appropriate compaction tools when backfilling, understanding compaction requirements e.g. number of passes.

Material handling

  • Handle and transport construction materials, including aggregates, using proper equipment and techniques with due care to manual handling.

Reinstatement work

  • Experience of installing concrete slabs and brick sets. Experience of laying asphalt advantageous.
  • Ability to construct concrete plinths with high quality finishing in accordance with the provided construction drawings advantageous.

Infrastructure installation

  • Installation of electrical ducts, with use of mandrill and other quality control methods.
  • Cable pulling experience (Winch training advantageous).

Safety and compliance

  • Full adherence to health and safety responsibilities and company processes and procedures to protect team members, public and assets.
  • Responsible management of material on site, including appropriate separation for recycling wherever possible.
  • Maintenance of a tidy site and welfare unit.

Qualifications, Education and Certifications

  • Proficiency in operating heavy machinery and construction equipment, with relevant UK certifications (e.g., CPCS, NPORS).
  • Health and safety training.
  • Full UK Clean Driving Licence (with an ability to tow).
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CSCS card, CPCS/NPORS certification, SHEA Power).
  • CAT & Genny Trained.
  • NRSWA Streetworks (Units 1-9) – Operative/Supervisor

Working Times

  • Monday to Friday plus availability for up to two Saturdays a month.
  • Overtime available.

Location

Kent-based, our yard is in Sittingbourne, but we have projects across the UK so occasional working away is required.
